Event Recap: MARC 5K, Fun Run & Playground Ribbon Cutting

Our honorary 38th participant gave a tail-wagging performance on race day!

Rain or shine, nothing could stop our 5K runners from crossing that finish line.

The weather didn’t stand a chance against a resilient group on a soggy Saturday morning in June. We had thirty-seven brave racers - and one very determined dog (yes, we said dog) - lace up and conquer the second annual MARC 5K, proving once again that a little rain can’t dampen community spirit.

Under a large archway on Neptune Drive, the racers lined up and awaited their cue, and at 8:30 AM they were off! Despite the steady rain, the excitement filled the air as the runners hit the course, cheered on by race staff and a few hardy spectators. It took less than 20 minutes for our first runner to cross the finish line: Kristin Barry, of Scarborough, took home first place overall with a time of 19:47. Close behind her was Nicholas Cole, of Freeport, Maine, who finished second with a time of 20:30.

Around 9:15 AM, as our 5K racers were making their final sprints, the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk was just getting started. Using the MARC’s ½ mile loop, participants of all ages and paces joined in for a cheerful pair of laps around the course. Whether they jogged, walked, or happily hopped through the puddles, everyone brought big energy - and even bigger smiles - to a rainy morning

Once the Fun Run wrapped up and all the 5K results were in, a few tough souls gathered near the new playground to help celebrate our top finishers. From there, we moved into the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our brand-new ages 0 - 5 playground, officially welcoming the space to the MARC. Town Councilmembers Jennifer Hicks and Katherine Wilson did the honors. While the playground wasn’t quite ready for play just yet, we were thrilled to recognize the generous support from our community partners who made the project possible. The space is set to open for play on July 3, so stay tuned for more events and opportunities to explore the new area in the weeks ahead!
